We held a major rally for Measure B on Wednesday at the Diridon station in San Jose that demonstrated that tremendous support for bringing BART to Silicon Valley. Two top experts in transportation -- former U.S. Transportation Secretary Norm Mineta and Caltrans director Will Kempton backed BART and talked about the importance of connecting BART to Caltrain and light rail. San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed emphasized how it would add thousands of jobs to the local economy.
Holding gold spikes in the air, representatives of BART, Caltrain and light rail symbolized the connection three rail systems that will occur at the Diridon station when BART is extended from Fremont, through downtown San Jose and into Santa Clara. BART will join Caltrain and light rail, and also the Altamont Commuter Express (ACE) train, Amtrak, and regular and express buses.
In all, nearly three dozen elected officials and community leaders attended to show their support for BART. Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins, executive officer of the South Bay Labor Council, said working families need public transit such as BART. Bill Coleman, CEO of Cassatt, said high-tech companies need to be able to offer prospective employees an attractive place to live.
The rally showed that elected officials and community leaders know how important it is to bring BART to Silicon Valley by voting “yes” on Measure B on Nov. 4.
