Jimmy Carter: some houses built for the poor of Haiti

Haiti has seen a lot of houses built for the poor after the catastrophic earthquake that almost two years ago, former US President Jimmy Carter said Monday.

In an interview about 10 minutes with The Associated Press, Carter said he saw little of housing reconstruction for Haiti struggling while driving from the airport to the US Ambassador's residence in Port-au-Prince to Leogane, a coastal town 18 miles (29 km) West of the capital were largely flattened in the quake due to its proximity to the Centre.

He added that there could be a construction in other parts of Haiti but that he did not see it.

"We don't see very much of the reconstruction of houses for people on low incomes," Carter said in January his wife sitting by his side. "We have seen some luxurious Villas, some houses along the coast is fixed. But there has been no evidence yet to the reconstruction of houses in Port-au-Prince. "

January 20, Carter weighing in with his own earthquake zone, her voice shaking: "I don't think anyone on Earth to live in a situation like this."
